River Alliance’s 10th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival
Offers Inspiring Films & Opportunity to Protect Wisconsin’s Waters
Madison, WI – February 21, 2017 – Water is life, and clean water for drinking, boating, fishing, swimming and—beer brewing—is part of what makes the Wisconsin way of life so great. This year’s 10th annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival, presented by the River Alliance of Wisconsin, returns to Madison’s Barrymore Theatre Wednesday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m. The Festival features seven award-winning short and medium length films, on a variety of environmental themes. In honor of this popular event’s 10th anniversary, each ticket purchased includes an optional membership to River Alliance of Wisconsin, which means attendees can enjoy the evening of films and receive follow-up opportunities, events and trainings to stay informed and involved in advocating for the protection and preservation of Wisconsin’s waters.
The Film festival is meant to empower, inform, and inspire new water champions who are willing to preserve and protect Wisconsin’s rivers and watersheds through advocacy to their elected officials, as well as a range of other hands-on conservation activities. “It's a new era in politics. People from all over the state know what's at stake and want to take action. For 23 years, River Alliance of Wisconsin has shown citizens how to protect our waters from shortsighted policy that benefits special interests instead of all of us. We’re including a complimentary membership with each Wild & Scenic ticket purchase this year,” said River Alliance Executive Director Raj Shukla. “Come to the Barrymore to enjoy seven inspiring short films about people who make a difference. Leave knowing River Alliance of Wisconsin will make it easy for you to make your voice heard for Wisconsin's waters.”
The 2017 film line-up includes everything from a rancher’s evolution in farming practices, to a subsistence farmer’s fight against the mining industry, to a Bangladeshi woman’s quest to scale the Seven Summits, to a super salmon whose incredible journey inspired thousands. This year’s films all feature inspiring, driven—and sometimes quirky—protagonists whose unforgettable stories will inspire film goers to celebrate their own agency in caring for our natural environment.
The complete 2017 Wild & Scenic line up, with brief descriptions, is as follows:
Pale Blue Dot - Human history situated against the tapestry of the cosmos Water Song - A farmer in Peru takes on a giant mining corporation The Living Forest - How the Kichwa tribe of Ecuador made an impact at the Paris COP21 climate conference Wasfia - The first Bangladeshi to scale the Seven Summits climbs for a cause One Hundred Thousand Beating Hearts - A fourth generation cattleman evolves from an industrial farmer to a sustainable, humane food producer The Super Salmon - The journey of a salmon who beat all the odds The Wild President - President Jimmy Carter was never the same after paddling the Chattooga River’s Bull Sluice
The signature VIP pre-party will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include pizza from The Roman Candle and a complimentary drink. The doors will open to general ticket holders at 6:15 p.m., and the film screening begins at 7:00 p.m.
“The Wild & Scenic Film Festival is about a community of people who care deeply about preserving the natural world and our way of life,” says Shukla, “We come together for a night of inspiration and a lot of fun with new and old friends committed to clean water for all.”
